For more traffic Ping Blog now and ping your sitemap now

In one of our recent articles we mentioned ping services for blogs and how they can benefit your on-line Arbonne business.  We felt it’d be useful to explain a little further about what a ping service is, and how it can be useful to you as an Arbonne home business owner, or any on-line home business owner for that matter utilizing the web to interact with customers.

A Ping service, is basically a service that allow you to automatically notify a list of blog directories and search engines that your blog has been updated.  In other words, that you’ve added or changed content.  Although many blog services do this automatically (or at times too often), it can be useful as a tool when you want to notify these blog directories immediately after you’ve made a change or an addition.  There are paid and free services to ping your blogs.  There are also general ping services and specialized ping services.  Specialized ping services are unique, and allow you to target specific audiences you’d like to reach.

Ping services aren’t only for blogs either, they work for websites as well.  The bigger your ping list the higher the chances of receiving traffic from those sources.  Before you begin pinging your blog, consider that it’s best to keep this down to a low minimum.  In other words, don’t repeatedly ping your blog over the course of a day since abuse of this service can easily have you tagged as a ping spammer, which will more than likely remove you from search results.  As a start, you can add your blog to Google’s blog search by accessing it from here and it can be indexed relatively quickly.  Once you’ve started there, now let’s look at the different ping services out there that can benefit you.  This list is by no way complete, there are dozens of services out there, careful what you use:
  1.     http://googleping.com
  2.     http://www.pingomatic.com
  3.     http://www.blogbuzzer.com
  4.     http://www.pingmyblog.com
  5.     http://www.feedshark.brainbliss.com
  6.     http://www.pingates.com

Review each one, and make sure the one (or multiple options) you use are not re-pinging the same destinations otherwise again, you can be considered a spammer.  Aside from pinging your blog, you can also ping your sitemap to search engines to notify them of changes as well.  If you recall, we mentioned the generating of sitemap.xml files for our blogs and websites in a more recent article.  XML sitemaps notify search engines about the pages, posts, and overall content that is available for crawling, or discovering. A  Sitemap can greatly enhance search engine crawling by providing explicit information about the specific links on your website or blog.  If you don’t have an xml sitemap yet, you can use a free xml sitemap generator to get you started.

To ping your sitemap.xml file, open a browser and follow these directions:

Ping Bing

Their ping service is http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?siteMap=%5B your sitemap web address].  So for example, my blog would be (all one line):

http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?siteMap=arbonnedreamsandopportunity.wordpress.com/sitemap.xml

To confirm you’ve pinged your sitemap correctly to Bing, you should see results that look like this:

“Thank you for submitting your sitemap.  Join the Bing Webmaster Tools to see your Sitemaps status and more reports on how you are doing on Bing”

Google Ping

The ping url is http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=http://www.example.com/sitemap-file.xml .  So in my case it would be  http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=http://arbonnedreamsandopportunity.wordpress.com/sitemap.xml

To confirm you’ve submitted your sitemap.xml properly to Google, you should see the following result in the next screen:

“Sitemap Notification Received

Your Sitemap has been successfully added to our list of Sitemaps to crawl. If this is the first time you are notifying Google about this Sitemap, please add it via http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ so you can track its status. Please note that we do not add all submitted URLs to our index, and we cannot make any predictions or guarantees about when or if they will appear.”

Ping Yahoo

Yahoo Ping Service is now integrated with Bing WebMaster Tools, so technically you are pinging both once you’ve done the Bing Ping.

Finally, if you just want to submit your sitemap.xml via a friendly user interface, you can use http://www.pingsitemap.com/
